Shyam Vishwakarma’s New Year Journey Through South Africa

“This time, we welcome the New Year somewhere special,” my wife said, her eyes twinkling with excitement.
For years, we had celebrated New Year’s Eve the same way - at home, raising a toast as the clock struck midnight. But deep down, we both knew we wanted something more. Not just another celebration, but an experience. Something unforgettable.
So, on 29th December 2024, we boarded a flight to South Africa - a land of untamed wilderness, golden coastlines, and breathtaking landscapes. It was a way to begin the new year with adventure, wonder, and a heart full of stories.
A Countdown by the Ocean

The moment we landed in Cape Town, the energy of the city embraced us. The warm summer air carried the scent of the ocean, and the sight of Table Mountain standing tall against the skyline was enough to leave us speechless.
Abdallah, our guide and driver, greeted us with a knowing smile. "You picked the perfect place for New Year’s," he said.
That evening, we wandered through the Sea Point Promenade and watched the locals and tourists alike soak in the last golden hues of the year. Musicians played soft jazz, children laughed as they ran along the beach, and the city buzzed with anticipation.
We spent two days exploring the beauty of Cape Town, and each one of the attractions gave us more joy and wonder.

As night fell on New Year’s Eve, we went to the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, one of the best spots in the city to celebrate the arrival of the new year, 2025. The air was electric - live music filled the night and laughter echoed across the harbour. We clinked our glasses of sparkling wine and our hands were intertwined as we counted down with the crowd.
"Three… Two… One…"
The sky erupted in fireworks, colours bursting over the water, reflecting like a thousand stars in the sea. My wife turned to me, her face glowing in the golden light.
"This," she whispered, "is how a new year should begin." And I could not have agreed more.
Seals, Penguins, and the Edge of the World

On the first day of 2025, with the excitement of the new year still fresh, we set out for a Cape Peninsula Tour - a journey along one of the most scenic coastal routes in the world.
Our first stop was Seal Island, where hundreds of seals basked in the sun or playfully dove into the waves. The ocean breeze was refreshing, and watching these carefree creatures felt like a perfect way to spend the first day of the new year- with joy and ease.
Then came Cape Point, the legendary tip of the Cape Peninsula. Standing on the rough cliffs, with the wind howling around us and the waves crashing below, I felt an overwhelming sense of freedom. It was as if the whole world stretched before us, full of possibilities.

But the biggest delight of the day was Boulders Beach.
There, among the white sands and turquoise waters, we met the famous African Penguins - tiny, tuxedo-clad birds waddling about, completely unbothered by the humans marvelling at them.
My wife laughed while watching them. "They look like they are celebrating the new year too."
And maybe they were.
Our Safari Experience

Leaving the city behind, we headed towards the Garden Route Reserve, a place where nature ruled and the modern world felt like a distant memory.
As dusk fell, we embarked on our first safari and watched the golden savannah stretching endlessly around us. The silence was thick with anticipation - until suddenly there was a movement in the tall grass.
A lioness, sleek and powerful, emerged from the shadows. Her golden eyes locked onto us for a fleeting moment before she disappeared into the wild. Further ahead, a herd of elephants moved gracefully and their enormous presence was humbling.

And then, as if to make the night even more magical, the sky above us came alive with stars. Without city lights to dim their brilliance, they stretched endlessly and looked like a celestial celebration of the new year.
We then went on a sunrise game drive the next morning, where we spotted zebras grazing, giraffes silhouetted against the dawn, and a family of cheetahs lazing under an acacia tree.
Caves, Bridges, and the Thrill of Tsitsikamma

From the wilderness, we ventured into the heart of Oudtshoorn, which is home to the stunning Cango Caves. While wandering through its cool and echoing chambers, we admired the rock formations, over a million years old.
Next, we visited the Safari Ostrich Farm, where we got up close to the massive Zimbabwe Blue Ostriches. Watching them walk around with their long legs moving in an almost comical dance made for an unexpected but delightful experience.
But the biggest thrill was yet to come.

At Tsitsikamma, we hiked across the Storms River Suspension Bridge, where the waves crashed dramatically below us. The adventure lover in me could not resist peeking down, while my wife clutched my hand a little tighter.
And then, we reached Bloukrans Bridge - the highest bungee jump in the world.
"Would you do it?" my wife teased.
I laughed, looking at the heart-stopping drop. "Let’s leave that to next year’s resolutions." Some adventures, I decided, were best saved for another time.
Saying Goodbye, But Taking Africa With Us

Back in Cape Town, we spent our final days exploring its rich history - the Bo-Kaap neighbourhood, where houses stood in vibrant colours, and the District Six Museum, a solemn reminder of the city’s past.
And of course, we could not leave without taking the Table Mountain cable car ride.
As soon as we reached the summit, we got a chance to witness the most beautiful scenery - looking over Cape Town as the sun dipped into the ocean. It was magical!

We had begun this journey as an escape, a different way to celebrate the new year.
But somewhere between the penguins of Boulders Beach, the roar of a lion in the wild, and the fireworks over Cape Town, we had found something more.
A reminder that life is meant to be explored. That every year, every moment, is a chance for something new.
