Nine days in Bali can take a traveller far beyond the postcard version of the island. There are ancient temples tucked into the landscape, black-sand beaches, dramatic cliffs, underwater adventures, rice terraces, volcanic views and evenings that unfold around traditional performances.

For Niloy Dey, the trip brought all of these experiences together in one long holiday across Bali and Nusa Penida. The journey moved from the eastern temples of the island to the cliffs of Nusa Penida, from the waters of Benoa to the sunset at Uluwatu, and eventually into the green landscapes around Ubud and Kintamani.

There was plenty packed into those nine days, but the itinerary also left room for slower moments. A candlelight dinner at Jimbaran, a floating breakfast and a relaxing massage added a different rhythm to the adventure.

Here’s how Niloy experienced Bali.

Bali’s Dramatic East

Bali began with an early start and a journey towards Lempuyang Temple, one of the island’s most recognisable landmarks. Known for its famous Gate of Heaven, the temple sits high in the mountains with views across the surrounding landscape. The experience comes with a fair amount of anticipation, especially because visitors often wait for their turn at the celebrated viewpoint.

From there, the landscape shifted towards Tirta Gangga, the former royal water palace known for its ornate pools, fountains and gardens. Stone sculptures and water-filled courtyards created a completely different atmosphere from the mountain temple.

The route continued towards Bali’s eastern coastline, where Black Sand Beach brought volcanic scenery into the picture before the final stop at Goa Lawah Temple, one of Bali’s important temple complexes. The name itself means “Bat Cave”, referring to the thousands of bats associated with the cave behind the temple.

An Island of Cliffs

Then came Nusa Penida, where Bali suddenly became much more rugged.

The journey began with a boat crossing before Niloy set out to explore the island’s western side. Kelingking Beach was one of the major highlights, with its famous T-Rex-shaped cliff extending into the sea. From above, the turquoise water and dramatic limestone coastline create the kind of landscape that has become synonymous with Nusa Penida.

The day continued through Angel’s Billabong and Broken Bay, two of the island’s best-known coastal viewpoints. Instead of spending hours at a single location, the route moved between several landscapes, giving Niloy a quick succession of cliffs, rock formations and open sea views.

At Bubu Beach, the experience changed again. Here, the coast became more accessible, with time for swimming and the possibility of snorkelling. After a day surrounded by Nusa Penida’s dramatic coastline, the boat ride back to Bali marked the end of one of the trip’s most adventurous chapters.

Adrenaline by the Coast

Bali then turned the energy back up at Benoa, where Niloy took on a combination of watersports.

The day brought together scuba diving, couple parasailing and jet skiing, putting the focus firmly on the water. Each activity offered a different way to experience Bali’s coastline, from heading beneath the surface to getting a wider view from above.

The adventure continued on land at Garuda Vishnu Kencana Cultural Park, home to the enormous statue of Vishnu riding Garuda. The monument rises prominently over the southern Bali landscape and has become one of the island’s major cultural landmarks.

It made for an interesting contrast. Within the same day, Niloy could move from the thrill of watersports to one of Bali’s most ambitious cultural and architectural sights.

Sunset, Beaches and Fire

Some Bali experiences are built around the time of day, and the afternoon around Uluwatu was one of them.

The route brought together Padang Padang Beach and Seminyak Beach before heading towards the southern tip of the island. Padang Padang offered a more intimate beach setting, while Seminyak brought the energy of one of Bali’s most popular coastal areas.

As evening approached, the journey reached Uluwatu Temple, perched dramatically above the Indian Ocean. The setting itself made the sunset worth slowing down for, but the evening had one more experience waiting.

At the Kecak Fire Dance, performers gathered for a traditional Balinese performance accompanied by rhythmic chanting and movement. With the sky darkening around the temple and the ocean stretching beyond the cliffs, the performance gave the day a distinctly Balinese ending.

Into Bali’s Green Heart

Away from the coast, Bali revealed another personality around Kintamani.

The views opened towards Lake Batur and Mount Batur, bringing volcanic landscapes into the journey. A stop at a coffee and spice plantation followed, offering an opportunity to sample some of the flavours associated with Bali while seeing how coffee and spices are grown locally.

Further into the island, the landscape became intensely green. The Tegalalang Rice Terrace brought Bali’s famous agricultural scenery into focus, with layered rice fields stretching across the hillsides.

Then came Tegenungan Waterfall, followed by the Ubud Monkey Forest, where dense greenery replaced the open coastal landscapes from earlier in the trip.

The day ended on a more playful note at the Bali Jungle Swing. With multiple swings, photo nests and viewpoints built into the lush surroundings, it was an easy place to spend time enjoying Bali’s scenery from a completely different perspective. A local Balinese lunch rounded off the experience.

A Day to Slow Down

After several days of temples, beaches, boats, watersports and sightseeing, Bali offered Niloy something simpler.

A full day was kept aside for leisure, with a two-hour massage and a complimentary floating breakfast. Instead of chasing another landmark, the day allowed the holiday to breathe.

The floating breakfast, enjoyed from the pool, was particularly suited to the slower pace. It was the kind of morning that could stretch without a schedule, giving Niloy time to enjoy the hotel and the surroundings after several action-packed days.

By this point, the trip had covered an impressive range of Bali experiences. The final day could simply be about enjoying where he was.

Meghalaya gave Smita Shetty and her group four things that are difficult to find together on one holiday: dense green forests, enormous waterfalls, adventurous trails and rivers so clear they almost looked unreal. Over eight days, the group travelled through Shillong, Sohra, Nongriat, Mawlynnong, Dawki and Jowai, with plenty of time spent outside the vehicle and in the landscape itself.

What made the holiday stand out, though, was that not everything stayed neatly within the plan. Their driver, Krishna Roy, was happy to make room for detours and take them to places beyond the itinerary. That little bit of flexibility turned a scheduled Meghalaya holiday into something that felt much more like their own trip.

Into Meghalaya’s Green Heart

The first real taste of Meghalaya came on the roads around Shillong and Sohra, where the scenery seemed to change every few minutes. The group found themselves stopping at viewpoints, following short forest trails and repeatedly getting pulled towards waterfalls.

Wei Sawdong was one of those places that required some effort before revealing itself. The group walked roughly 200 metres through the greenery to reach the three-tiered waterfall, where water dropped through a series of rocky levels surrounded by thick forest. There was a sense of discovery to it — the sort of place where the walk itself becomes part of the experience.

And then came the big views. At Nohkalikai Falls, the landscape suddenly opened up into one of Meghalaya's most dramatic sights. Seven Sisters Falls stretched across the cliffs in the distance, while the viewpoints around Mawkdok Dympep revealed the enormous folds of the Khasi Hills.

Where the Forest Built a Bridge

Somewhere between all that greenery, the group traded roads for a trail.

From Tyrna, they began the trek towards Nongriat, descending through the forest towards the famous Double Decker Living Root Bridge. The trail brought them across smaller bridges and through thick vegetation, with the sound of water following them through much of the walk.

Then the roots appeared.

The Double Decker Living Root Bridge is exactly the kind of thing that makes Meghalaya feel unlike anywhere else. Instead of being constructed from concrete or steel, the bridge has been shaped from the living roots of rubber fig trees, guided and strengthened by generations of Khasi communities.

The return meant climbing back up roughly 3,000 steps. That probably made the eventual sight of the vehicle waiting at the top feel especially welcome.

Caves, Waterfalls and Unexpected Stops

Not every memorable moment required a long trek. Some came from simply following the road and seeing where Meghalaya led them.

The group explored Mawsmai Cave, moving through its narrow limestone passages, and later ventured into Arwah Cave, where fossils can be spotted within the natural formations. These were very different from the open landscapes outside, cool, dark and enclosed, with the rocks revealing themselves slowly as they moved deeper inside.

And then there were the stops that were never really about rushing to the next destination. This was where Krishna's flexibility came in. Smita specifically remembers him taking the group to places that weren't part of their itinerary. Those detours gave the holiday some breathing room and meant that the group could enjoy Meghalaya beyond the sightseeing list they had originally set out with.

The River Was Almost Too Clear

By the time they reached the Dawki and Shnongpdeng side of Meghalaya, the landscape had changed again.

The group made their way to the Umngot River, famous for its startlingly clear water. From the boat, the riverbed could be seen beneath the surface, creating the strange impression that the boats were floating in mid-air rather than travelling across water.

After days of waterfalls and forest trails, this was a slower kind of adventure. The group could simply sit on the river, take in the hills around them and enjoy how different the landscape felt from Sohra.

There was more exploring around Mawlynnong and Riwai too. The group saw the famous Balancing Rock and walked to the Single Decker Living Root Bridge, another example of how the Khasi people have worked with living trees to create something functional and extraordinary at the same time.

One More Waterfall

Krang Suri brought the group back to the water, but this time in a setting that felt almost made for spending an afternoon.

Tucked away near Jowai, the waterfall drops into a natural pool surrounded by rocky cliffs and greenery. After travelling through Meghalaya's winding hill roads, the group had the option of doing something wonderfully simple: get into the water, sit around the falls or just take their time taking it all in.

Back in Shillong, the pace became more relaxed. The group explored Laitlum Canyon, with its wide views across the Khasi Hills, before spending time around the city. The trip also took them through the cultural side of Meghalaya at Don Bosco Museum, Cathedral Church and Ward's Lake, while Police Bazaar offered a livelier end to their time in Shillong.

By then, Meghalaya had given them everything! Long drives, forest walks, waterfalls, caves, rivers, village trails and enough unplanned stops to keep the holiday from feeling overly structured.

Why Smita Recommends Thrillophilia

For Smita, a big part of the experience came down to the person handling the journey on the ground. She singled out Krishna Roy for being “excellent and very accommodating”, particularly appreciating that he took the group to places beyond what had originally been planned. When one part of the plan did not work out, he also helped them find alternative places to explore rather than allowing the day to go to waste.

There was, however, one important gap in the planning. The group had booked the David Scott Trek, but the logistics did not work in their favour. Since they were staying in Sohra, reaching the trek's starting point took around 2.5 hours. They eventually arrived at about 10 AM, by which point guides were unavailable because it was peak tourist season, and the group had to miss the trek altogether.

Smita's feedback is particularly useful for future North East travellers: the David Scott Trek would be better planned while staying in Shillong, and guides should be pre-booked during the busy season. It is the kind of logistical detail that can make a real difference on a trip like this.

Despite that missed experience, Smita summed up the holiday simply: “Our trip to Meghalaya was very good.” And with Krishna's flexibility helping the group discover places outside the original plan, their Meghalaya holiday ended up just as one would want! Full of Memories!

"It became a little rocky in the middle because there was a little confusion with the hotels," Vanshika admitted, bringing it up on her own without being asked. Managing two properties across a multi-city trip for four adults leaves exactly that kind of room for something to get crossed.

Most Egypt trip reviews usually begin with the pyramids. Rijul’s story somehow started with customer support.

By the time the trip finally happened, they had already been discussing it for months. Not because the booking was difficult, but because Rijul had questions about literally everything. Flights. Cruise category. Hotel rooms. Internal transfers. Whether the trip would feel too hectic after Day 5.

Cairo Did Not Feel Real at First

The trip began in Cairo with a stay near the pyramids. That first evening included the Sound and Light show, which Rijul honestly expected to be overrated.

In Vaduz, we boarded a small tram and rode through a place that looked too perfect to be real. Next, the Swarovski Crystal World dazzled us, followed by the historic charm of Innsbruck, Austria. The Golden Roof shimmered in the afternoon light as street musicians played melodies.

By the time we reached Venice, my feet were sore, but my spirit was high. The city was a painting of blue water and stone bridges.

As our Vaporetto made its way through the canal waters that evening, my mom whispered, “This is exactly how I imagined it...”

We skipped the gondola ride for budget reasons, but walking through St. Mark’s Square, seeing the Doge’s Palace, and crossing the Bridge of Sighs was enough. I kept stealing glances at her, wondering if she was here or if I was dreaming it.

A Leaning Tower and One Final Sunset

We drove through Tuscany to Pisa next, and yes, we did the cliché leaning-tower photos. Sushil Kumar Singh had already travelled with Thrillophilia twice before this Sri Lanka trip, so the family did not spend weeks comparing websites or worrying about how things would work on arrival.

At 65, he and his companions wanted a holiday that moved at a comfortable pace. Beaches, greenery, decent food, maybe some history. Nothing too hectic.

Thrillophilia’s Sri Lanka package looked manageable on paper, though there was still that usual pre-trip confusion about luggage weight and medicines and whether Sri Lankan food would suit everyone. Sunny from the team kept helping with those small things that somehow become big things before departure.

The trip started in Colombo after a long flight from Varanasi. By the time they reached the hotel, everyone was too tired to explore properly. One person still insisted on going downstairs for tea at nearly midnight because “new country mein first chai toh banti hai.” The tea tasted different. Slightly stronger. Nobody could decide if they liked it or not.

The next morning changed the mood completely.

Somewhere Between Kandy and Pinnawala

The road to Kandy had those endless green stretches people usually post online, but honestly, what stayed with them more was a roadside fruit stall where the driver stopped for king coconut water. It was humid, slightly sticky weather, and that drink fixed everyone’s mood instantly.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was crowded. School groups everywhere. Still, watching the elephants walk towards the water together had something calming about it. One elephant kept spraying water at random people standing too close. Prabhat Ranjan Sinha almost escaped. Almost.

Kandy itself felt quieter than expected. In the evening, they drove around the lake while lights slowly appeared around the city. Later came the Kandyan dance performance. Loud drums, fire acts, sharp movements. Sushil admitted later that he thought it would be “just another cultural program,” but it turned out to be one of the better evenings of the trip.

The hotels were good overall. A little far from the city sometimes, which became mildly irritating after long drives. But then again, those quieter locations also meant waking up to bird sounds instead of traffic, so nobody complained too much.

Ella Was Everyone’s Favourite. Somehow.

Not because it had the most famous attraction. It just felt good there.

The drive itself was half the experience. The tea plantations, the mist sitting lazily on the hills and tiny houses painted blue or pink for no obvious reason.

At one point, the vehicle slowed because a dog refused to move from the middle of the road, and the driver casually said, “He sleeps there every afternoon.”

That became an inside joke for the rest of the trip.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress came before Ella, and the climb was definitely tougher than expected. Halfway through, everyone pretended to admire the view when they were actually just trying to catch their breath. But reaching the top felt satisfying in that very old-school travel way. No fancy café waiting there. Just wind, ruins, and a huge stretch of green land below.

Ella had cooler weather. Ravana Falls was crowded near the entrance, people clicking photos nonstop, but the Nine Arch Bridge area felt calmer once they walked a little further. The tea factory visit was interesting too, mostly because the smell of fresh tea leaves stayed in the air the whole time.

And yes, everyone bought tea packets even after saying they wouldn’t.

Galle, Beaches, and Minor Travel Chaos

By the time they reached the southern coast, the trip had settled into a rhythm. Wake up. Eat slowly. Drive. Stop somewhere scenic. Repeat.

Mirissa Beach was exactly the kind of place where nobody wanted to do much. Just sit quietly and watch the water. Coconut Tree Hill had tourists lined up for photos, which was mildly funny because ten people were trying to create “candid” pictures at the same time.

Galle Fort felt different from the rest of Sri Lanka. Old buildings, sea breeze, tiny cafés hidden inside colonial streets. One evening, they walked around there without checking maps and ended up near the lighthouse just before sunset.

There were a few issues with the vehicle support during parts of the trip. Some delays. A little confusion once. Nothing disastrous, though travel rarely goes perfectly anyway.

Back in Colombo before departure, the group visited places like Gangaramaya Temple and Galle Face Green. But by then, conversations had already shifted toward future trips.

That probably says enough.

Sri Lanka gave them good weather, slower mornings, lots of greenery, and a week where nobody seemed in a hurry for once. Even after returning home, Sushil Kumar Singh had already started discussing where the fourth trip with Thrillophilia should happen.

It wasn’t the pyramids, the Nile, or even the legends of pharaohs that drew us to Egypt. Honestly, we weren’t looking for a destination at all. We were looking for a reset from the busy life. At the Khan El Khalili bazaar, the present collided with traditions. The shopkeepers had perfected the art of the warm hustle—handing you tea, complimenting your taste, and convincing you that their trinkets were the missing pieces of your life. I ended up buying a small copper lamp, more for the memory than anything else. 

My wife teased me mercilessly: “You bought magic without the genie?” But when we lit it that night, the patterns it cast on the walls felt magical enough.

If Cairo was the chaos of humanity, the desert was its silence. The Black and White Deserts were like walking into an abstract painting. At one point, staring at the surreal limestone formations, my wife said, “This feels like being on the moon, except warmer.”

Our guide, Mahmoud, shared stories as we bounced along in the 4x4. He spoke of how the desert changes people—its vastness forcing you to confront yourself. “In the city,” he said, “you are distracted. Here, you meet your soul.”

That night, by the campfire, we laughed like kids. The sand was cold under our feet, but the fire warmed us, and the food—simple but delicious—felt like a feast. My favourite memory, though, wasn’t grand or historical. It was during a quiet evening on the cruise. My wife and I played cards on the balcony, sipping hibiscus tea and listening to the gentle splash of the water. At one point, she looked up and said, “This is it. The Sea and the Unexpected
