As we travelled through the Black Forest and beside the roaring Rhine Falls, I saw a sparkle in Mom’s eyes that reminded me of my childhood.

But nothing compared to the beauty of Mount Titlis.

As we ascended in the rotating cable car, snowflakes moved around us. At the top, I saw my mom building a snowman with her gloves half on and her laughter ringing. “I have not seen snow since I was a teenager,” she smiled.

In Vaduz, we boarded a small tram and rode through a place that looked too perfect to be real. Next, the Swarovski Crystal World dazzled us, followed by the historic charm of Innsbruck, Austria. The Golden Roof shimmered in the afternoon light as street musicians played melodies.

By the time we reached Venice, my feet were sore, but my spirit was high. The city was a painting of blue water and stone bridges.

As our Vaporetto made its way through the canal waters that evening, my mom whispered, “This is exactly how I imagined it...”

We skipped the gondola ride for budget reasons, but walking through St. Mark’s Square, seeing the Doge’s Palace, and crossing the Bridge of Sighs was enough. I kept stealing glances at her, wondering if she was here or if I was dreaming it.

A Leaning Tower and One Final Sunset

We drove through Tuscany to Pisa next, and yes, we did the cliché leaning-tower photos. But what stood out was our visit to Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence, where we stood watching the city under the pink blush of sunset. My mom turned to me and said, “This whole trip... I feel like I am living a second youth.”

Sushil Kumar Singh had already travelled with Thrillophilia twice before this Sri Lanka trip, so the family did not spend weeks comparing websites or worrying about how things would work on arrival.

At 65, he and his companions wanted a holiday that moved at a comfortable pace. Beaches, greenery, decent food, maybe some history. Nothing too hectic.

Thrillophilia’s Sri Lanka package looked manageable on paper, though there was still that usual pre-trip confusion about luggage weight and medicines and whether Sri Lankan food would suit everyone. The trip started in Colombo after a long flight from Varanasi. By the time they reached the hotel, everyone was too tired to explore properly. Somewhere Between Kandy and Pinnawala

The road to Kandy had those endless green stretches people usually post online, but honestly, what stayed with them more was a roadside fruit stall where the driver stopped for king coconut water. It was humid, slightly sticky weather, and that drink fixed everyone’s mood instantly.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was crowded. School groups everywhere. Still, watching the elephants walk towards the water together had something calming about it. One elephant kept spraying water at random people standing too close. Prabhat Ranjan Sinha almost escaped. Almost.

Kandy itself felt quieter than expected. In the evening, they drove around the lake while lights slowly appeared around the city. Later came the Kandyan dance performance. Loud drums, fire acts, sharp movements. Sushil admitted later that he thought it would be “just another cultural program,” but it turned out to be one of the better evenings of the trip.

The hotels were good overall. A little far from the city sometimes, which became mildly irritating after long drives. But then again, those quieter locations also meant waking up to bird sounds instead of traffic, so nobody complained too much.

Ella Was Everyone’s Favourite. Somehow.

Not because it had the most famous attraction. It just felt good there.

The drive itself was half the experience. The tea plantations, the mist sitting lazily on the hills and tiny houses painted blue or pink for no obvious reason.

At one point, the vehicle slowed because a dog refused to move from the middle of the road, and the driver casually said, “He sleeps there every afternoon.”

That became an inside joke for the rest of the trip.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress came before Ella, and the climb was definitely tougher than expected. Halfway through, everyone pretended to admire the view when they were actually just trying to catch their breath. But reaching the top felt satisfying in that very old-school travel way. No fancy café waiting there. Just wind, ruins, and a huge stretch of green land below.

Ella had cooler weather. Ravana Falls was crowded near the entrance, people clicking photos nonstop, but the Nine Arch Bridge area felt calmer once they walked a little further. The tea factory visit was interesting too, mostly because the smell of fresh tea leaves stayed in the air the whole time.

And yes, everyone bought tea packets even after saying they wouldn’t.

Galle, Beaches, and Minor Travel Chaos

By the time they reached the southern coast, the trip had settled into a rhythm. Wake up. Eat slowly. Drive. Stop somewhere scenic. Repeat.

Mirissa Beach was exactly the kind of place where nobody wanted to do much. Just sit quietly and watch the water. Coconut Tree Hill had tourists lined up for photos, which was mildly funny because ten people were trying to create “candid” pictures at the same time.

Galle Fort felt different from the rest of Sri Lanka. Old buildings, sea breeze, tiny cafés hidden inside colonial streets. One evening, they walked around there without checking maps and ended up near the lighthouse just before sunset.

There were a few issues with the vehicle support during parts of the trip. Some delays. A little confusion once. Nothing disastrous, though travel rarely goes perfectly anyway.

Back in Colombo before departure, the group visited places like Gangaramaya Temple and Galle Face Green. But by then, conversations had already shifted toward future trips.

It wasn’t the pyramids, the Nile, or even the legends of pharaohs that drew us to Egypt. Honestly, we weren’t looking for a destination at all. We were looking for a reset from the busy life. If Cairo was the chaos of humanity, the desert was its silence. The Black and White Deserts were like walking into an abstract painting. At one point, staring at the surreal limestone formations, my wife said, “This feels like being on the moon, except warmer.”

Our guide, Mahmoud, shared stories as we bounced along in the 4x4. He spoke of how the desert changes people—its vastness forcing you to confront yourself. “In the city,” he said, “you are distracted. Here, you meet your soul.”

The Sea and the Unexpected

By the time we reached Hurghada, we thought we knew Egypt. But the Red Sea introduced us to its playful side. Scuba diving was like stepping into a dream—bright coral reefs, fish in colours I didn’t know existed, and the weightless feeling of being underwater.

Our last day in Cairo was bittersweet. We found ourselves back on a rooftop, overlooking the city as the sun set. The air was cool, the muezzin’s call echoing softly in the background. My wife turned to me and said, “Do you think Egypt is what we needed?”

I thought about the pyramids, the deserts, the Nile, and the Red Sea. But mostly, I thought about us—how Egypt had given us space to pause, to reconnect, to just be. “No,” I said, smiling. “I think Egypt was more than we ever expected.”

A short Sri Lanka trip review usually says more than a long one. Sri Lanka welcomed Archana Priyadarshani and Krishna Kumar Sinha with a Christmas and New Year celebration after they landed in Colombo on the 23rd of December. The route was made of three cultural triangles: the country in the north, the country in the middle, and the southern coast on the way back. Dambulla was the soft opening.

The first day of the trip started with their landing in Sigiriya territory after transferring from Colombo Airport, with a stop at Dambulla Cave Temple on the way. Kandy itself unfolded over the next two days. The Grand Kandyan Hotel as the base, an evening lake drive on arrival, followed by a traditional Kandyan dance performance, and then a full sightseeing day covering the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, and the white Buddha statue at Bahirawakanda Vihara. The Tooth Relic Temple, in particular, sees the kind of quiet reverence from local visitors that gives the whole place a different atmosphere from the standard tourist circuit.

The Hill Country Did What It Was Meant To

Nuwara Eliya is where Sri Lanka suddenly turns greener to attract all the eyes as the traveller suddenly discovers. Tea plantations descend each hill, drifting clouds by day and breathing reasonably crisp night air after the muck of the plains. The journey gradually gained height, and two nights were spent as a base at the Araliya Green City.

The second day started in Nuwara Eliya by visiting Seetha Eliya, Hakgala Gardens, Victoria Park, Gregory Lake, Ramboda Falls and the Hanuman Temple; the last two of which will have more resonance with Ramayana-sensitised tourists than any of the previous horse riding and golf. The third day was spent visiting Ella, the Nine Arch Bridge, and the Ravana Falls, which do most of the heavy lifting on any hill-country itinerary. The tea factory tour in between was the kind of obligatory stop that builds the reputation of Ceylon teas. The chauffeur guide who drove them through these two days handled the winding mountain roads with the ease of someone who has driven them a thousand times, which, on those hairpin bends, matters more than scenery.

The South Coast Brought the Beaches

On the way to Galle, after passing the turn to Ya Nui Beach, where the territory of the coast broadens, the drive continued through Mirissa. Next up was Osaka, a city that combined rich history with unrelenting energy. They stayed at the Rihga Royal Osaka, where five-star luxury and incredible food awaited them.

The breakfast buffet was impressive, especially with the abundance of sushi. Even the vending machines appeared to be stocked with sushi.

Osaka Castle offered a glimpse into samurai history. Their daughter donned a samurai helmet for a picture, ready to take on any imaginary battle. Her husband spent half the time trying to convince her father-in-law to pose with him in an oversized kabuki mask for memories.

Dotonbori, the neon-lit district, captured Osaka’s essence: bright, loud, and packed with every kind of food imaginable. They tried okonomiyaki, Japanese savoury pancakes. The in-laws were impressed and declared it their favourite. It was heartwarming to see them enjoy something completely new.
