Nine days in Bali can take a traveller far beyond the postcard version of the island. There are ancient temples tucked into the landscape, black-sand beaches, dramatic cliffs, underwater adventures, rice terraces, volcanic views and evenings that unfold around traditional performances.

For Niloy Dey, the trip brought all of these experiences together in one long holiday across Bali and Nusa Penida. The journey moved from the eastern temples of the island to the cliffs of Nusa Penida, from the waters of Benoa to the sunset at Uluwatu, and eventually into the green landscapes around Ubud and Kintamani.

There was plenty packed into those nine days, but the itinerary also left room for slower moments. A candlelight dinner at Jimbaran, a floating breakfast and a relaxing massage added a different rhythm to the adventure.

Here’s how Niloy experienced Bali.

Bali’s Dramatic East

Bali began with an early start and a journey towards Lempuyang Temple, one of the island’s most recognisable landmarks. Known for its famous Gate of Heaven, the temple sits high in the mountains with views across the surrounding landscape. The experience comes with a fair amount of anticipation, especially because visitors often wait for their turn at the celebrated viewpoint.

From there, the landscape shifted towards Tirta Gangga, the former royal water palace known for its ornate pools, fountains and gardens. Stone sculptures and water-filled courtyards created a completely different atmosphere from the mountain temple.

The route continued towards Bali’s eastern coastline, where Black Sand Beach brought volcanic scenery into the picture before the final stop at Goa Lawah Temple, one of Bali’s important temple complexes. The name itself means “Bat Cave”, referring to the thousands of bats associated with the cave behind the temple.

An Island of Cliffs

Then came Nusa Penida, where Bali suddenly became much more rugged.

The journey began with a boat crossing before Niloy set out to explore the island’s western side. Kelingking Beach was one of the major highlights, with its famous T-Rex-shaped cliff extending into the sea. From above, the turquoise water and dramatic limestone coastline create the kind of landscape that has become synonymous with Nusa Penida.

The day continued through Angel’s Billabong and Broken Bay, two of the island’s best-known coastal viewpoints. Instead of spending hours at a single location, the route moved between several landscapes, giving Niloy a quick succession of cliffs, rock formations and open sea views.

At Bubu Beach, the experience changed again. Here, the coast became more accessible, with time for swimming and the possibility of snorkelling. After a day surrounded by Nusa Penida’s dramatic coastline, the boat ride back to Bali marked the end of one of the trip’s most adventurous chapters.

Adrenaline by the Coast

Bali then turned the energy back up at Benoa, where Niloy took on a combination of watersports.

The day brought together scuba diving, couple parasailing and jet skiing, putting the focus firmly on the water. Each activity offered a different way to experience Bali’s coastline, from heading beneath the surface to getting a wider view from above.

The adventure continued on land at Garuda Vishnu Kencana Cultural Park, home to the enormous statue of Vishnu riding Garuda. The monument rises prominently over the southern Bali landscape and has become one of the island’s major cultural landmarks.

It made for an interesting contrast. Within the same day, Niloy could move from the thrill of watersports to one of Bali’s most ambitious cultural and architectural sights.

Sunset, Beaches and Fire

Some Bali experiences are built around the time of day, and the afternoon around Uluwatu was one of them.

The route brought together Padang Padang Beach and Seminyak Beach before heading towards the southern tip of the island. Padang Padang offered a more intimate beach setting, while Seminyak brought the energy of one of Bali’s most popular coastal areas.

As evening approached, the journey reached Uluwatu Temple, perched dramatically above the Indian Ocean. The setting itself made the sunset worth slowing down for, but the evening had one more experience waiting.

At the Kecak Fire Dance, performers gathered for a traditional Balinese performance accompanied by rhythmic chanting and movement. With the sky darkening around the temple and the ocean stretching beyond the cliffs, the performance gave the day a distinctly Balinese ending.

Into Bali’s Green Heart

Away from the coast, Bali revealed another personality around Kintamani.

The views opened towards Lake Batur and Mount Batur, bringing volcanic landscapes into the journey. A stop at a coffee and spice plantation followed, offering an opportunity to sample some of the flavours associated with Bali while seeing how coffee and spices are grown locally.

Further into the island, the landscape became intensely green. The Tegalalang Rice Terrace brought Bali’s famous agricultural scenery into focus, with layered rice fields stretching across the hillsides.

Then came Tegenungan Waterfall, followed by the Ubud Monkey Forest, where dense greenery replaced the open coastal landscapes from earlier in the trip.

The day ended on a more playful note at the Bali Jungle Swing. With multiple swings, photo nests and viewpoints built into the lush surroundings, it was an easy place to spend time enjoying Bali’s scenery from a completely different perspective. A local Balinese lunch rounded off the experience.

A Day to Slow Down

After several days of temples, beaches, boats, watersports and sightseeing, Bali offered Niloy something simpler.

A full day was kept aside for leisure, with a two-hour massage and a complimentary floating breakfast. Instead of chasing another landmark, the day allowed the holiday to breathe.

The floating breakfast, enjoyed from the pool, was particularly suited to the slower pace. It was the kind of morning that could stretch without a schedule, giving Niloy time to enjoy the hotel and the surroundings after several action-packed days.

By this point, the trip had covered an impressive range of Bali experiences. The final day could simply be about enjoying where he was.
